Reduce Costs with Sheet Hydroforming - Jones Metal Products

Sheet hydroforming is the most cost-effective cold-forming method for small runs of irregularly shaped parts. In sheet hydroforming, tooling costs are reduced because there is no need for a female die. The rubber diaphragm and forming chamber act in its place, so the male die and a blank holding ring are the only tools needed to produce the part.

Asymmetrical parts can often require multiple cycles with conventional presses. With sheet hydroforming, however, the process is efficient and parts typically emerge from the process in a single cycle. This reduced press time adds up to significant cost savings in the manufacturing process.
It can be a challenge to produce irregularly shaped parts that are both blemish-free and durable. That said, sheet hydroforming is the perfect cold-forming method for achieving these challenging requirements. Matched die operations can leave unsightly scratches and stretch lines. However, because the female die is replaced by a rubber diaphragm, parts typically emerge from the process shiny and blemish-free without the need for additional – and costly – finishing processes. Sheet hydroforming also produces parts that are structurally strong without being heavier or denser as a result.

In the search for a contract hydroformer, companies should evaluate partners who have the expertise and experience needed to handle challenging runs with precision. Jones Metal Forming can work with blanks that measure up to 32.5 inches and can create parts with depths of up to 14 inches deep and diameters up to 27 inches. We also work with material gauges up to 3/8 inches for steel and up to one inch for aluminum. Engineers at Jones Metal have years of expertise in the defense, automotive, medical, health care and commercial lighting industries. They understand the unique needs of manufacturers and can work with customers to save them time and money in the cold-forming process.
