Jones Metals’ aluminum heat treating is a cost effective choice for companies in Cleveland, Ohio, looking to save money on freight shipping. Often with aluminum heat treating, the part is heated and shipped back to the customer, but frequently needs to be shipped back for a second treatment. Because freight shipping can be a costly investment, Jones Metals’ close proximity to Cleveland makes it perfect for companies looking to save money in this area.
Further, Jones Metal sends a truck to the Cleveland area twice a week as part of a regular delivery. Cleveland companies that need aluminum heat treating can take advantage of this convenience by only paying for a drop, rather than the full cost of shipping.
When aluminum parts need additional treatment for annealing, stress relieving or aging, our customers come to Jones Metal for precision and dependable delivery. In aluminum heat treating, parts are heated and cooled to change their physical properties without altering the product’s shape. Parts are rapidly heated to very high temperatures, stabilized and then quickly cooled. The process is often used to soften or strengthen a part, relieve stress in a part, or improve ductility following a cold working operation, like hydroforming or deep draw stamping.
In an effort to provide excellent turnaround times to our aerospace, defense and commercial customers, Jones Metal has two drop bottom furnaces that can be heated to 1,000 degrees F, a subzero freezer, a glycol quenching tank and a 2800 gallon tank for hot water quenching. In addition to glycol and hot water quenching, Jones Metal also has the capability for air quenching.
Hot water quenching is the newest addition to the Jones Metal aluminum heating treatment portfolio. For some aluminum alloys, hot water quenching is required. To start the process, de-ionized water heats to temperatures ranging from 130 to 150 degrees F. The quench cycle completes very quickly, within 12 seconds. Parts that benefit from hot water quenching tend to be thick – more than an inch thick, such as casings, plates, extrusions and forgings. Thinner parts tend to be better suited for glycol or air quenching, which can help prevent parts from warping.
