What Is Heat Treating?

Heat treating is the process of applying extreme temperatures to metal to change the microstructure of a part and harden it. The process of heat treating improves strength and formability, and the metal still returns to its original ductility after this process. Jones Metal Products offers two forms of heat treating: vacuum heat treating and aluminum heat treating.

Aluminum heat treating is widely applied across aerospace, defense and commercial industries. Jones Metal Products treats parts with the following services: aging, air quenching, hot and cold water quenching, glycol quenching, partial and full annealing, hardening, solution treatment and stress relieving solutions. Products that can be treated with aluminum heat treating include wrought aluminum sheets, plates, parts, forgings and investment castings.

Vacuum heat treatment is great for non-aluminum products that need a bright surface finishes and minimal distortion of the material. Jones Metal Products vacuum heat treating services include annealing, hardening, solution treating, stress relieving and tempering. Jones Metal’s   vacuum heat treatment speeds up development and production time for parts formed in-house.

What Can Heat Treating Do For Small Parts?

Heat treating can improve the effectiveness of small parts. Small parts are strengthened by this process, which allows the part to reliably perform to a higher caliber than without the heat treatment. Heat treating small parts such as pins, gears, bolts and fasteners enhances the safety and capability of the end product.

In order to cater to our customers’ diverse needs, JMP can treat a large variety of materials. Our capabilities include aluminum heat treating for aluminum alloys 2014, 2024, 6013, 6061 and 7075. We also provide vacuum heat treating services for steel, brass, bronze, copper, titanium alloys and ferrous alloys. Whether we are working with large parts up to 36” x 28” x 52”, or something as small as a bolt, Jones Metal Products can find the service that’s right for your part. The appropriate service is determined by a product’s metal, desired finish, and intended use.

If you are looking to outsource heat treating for your parts, Jones Metal Products offers services for parts of many materials and sizes. For more information about our services, contact our experts at 888-479-9566, request a quote or submit specifications today.
