Jones Metal Forming is an expert in heat treating to NADCAP standards. Quality control is crucial for our customers, especially those in the aerospace industry. Metal parts used in aerospace and defense applications often play a critical role in a given piece of machinery. Further, they often withstand high amounts of heat or stress in application. Part failure is simply not an option. That’s where NADCAP standards come into play.
NADCAP specifies a standardized approach to quality products and a reduction in redundant auditing throughout the aerospace industry. In 1990, the Performance Review Institute (PRI) established NADCAP (National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program) standards to encourage the development a world-class supply-base for the global aerospace industry.
Typically, audits are conducted by experienced individuals with many years of experience in the aerospace industry. During a NADCAP audit, the auditor will look at several aspects of the heat treatment process, including but not limited to:
- The frequency with which dryer ovens are calibrated,
- Whether all measuring and test equipment is calibrated within the measurement management systems standard ISO 10012, and
- Whether heat treatment furnaces are surveyed at the required tolerance and temperature range.
It is relatively common for metal parts used in aerospace applications to be heat treated, which is why we pride ourselves on our NADCAP accreditation. In heat treatment, metals are heated to high temperatures and then quickly cooled. This process alters their physical and mechanical properties, such as hardening, softening, or stress relieving, without changing the product shape. Heat treatment is often specified to increase the strength of a metal part, but it can also be used to improve machining, improve formability, or restore ductility after a cold working operation. We have a variety of heat treating capabilities including aging, tempering, air and nitrogen quenching, stress relieving, annealing, solution treatment, cryogenic treatment and hardening
Our customers in the aerospace and defense industries can be assured that we’re always heat treating to NADCAP standards. Our accreditation displays our commitment to the highest standards of quality.
